What if I want to start a public charity?
The majority of ASF members are private foundations, and our resources focus on grantmaking, governance, investment, and tax and legal issues specific to private foundations. If you’re interested in starting a public charity, here are some places to start:
- State-by-state information on nonprofit incorporation and charitable activities.
- The National Council of Nonprofits lists state associations of nonprofit organizations. State nonprofit associations provide products and services for new and existing nonprofit organizations.
- The Foundation Center provides education and resources to grantmakers and grantseekers, including online libraries and educational centers located around the country, (212) 620-4230 or (800) 424-9836.
